چکیده

This paper introduces a simple new approach to object recognition from silhouettes. This new approach utilizes features extracted using an adaptive approximation technique called high-resolution pursuit (HRP). In this work, a comparatively small set of HRP features and a simple recognition scheme are used. We demonstrate the strengths of the HRP-based recognition scheme by discriminating among 17 military aircraft. The HRP-based algorithm matches the performance of a widely studied method based on Fourier descriptors in the presence of boundary, scale and orientation variations, and surpasses the performance of the Fourier descriptor-based algorithm in the presence of occlusion and localized silhouette variations. Mobile Robot Aided Silhouette Imaging and Robust Body Pose Recognition for Elderly-Fall Detection

This article introduces a mobile infrared silhouette imaging and sparse representation-based pose recognition for building an elderly-fall detection system. The proposed imaging paradigm exploits the novel use of the pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensor in pursuit of body silhouette imaging. A mobile robot carrying a vertical column of multi-PIR detectors is organized for the silhouette acquisiti...

Multiscale geometric feature extraction and object recognition

This thesis describes a new adaptive approximation technique called high resolution pursuit (HRP), and demonstrates how HRP can be used to extract features that are suitable for object recognition. Recently, adaptive approximation techniques have become popular for obtaining representations of large classes of signals. These techniques include method of frames, matching pursuit, and basis pursu...

Simple silhouettes for complex surfaces

Complex meshes tend to have intricate, detailed silhouettes. This paper proposes two algorithms for extracting a simpler, approximate silhouette from a high-resolution model. Our methods preserve the important features of the silhouette by using the silhouette of a coarser, simplified mesh as a guide. Our simple silhouettes have significantly fewer edges than the original silhouette, while stil...

Gesture spotting for low-resolution sports video annotation

Human gesture recognition plays an important role in automating the analysis of video material at a high level. Especially in sports videos, the determination of the player’s gestures is a key task. In many sports views, the camera covers a large part of the sports arena, resulting in low resolution of the player’s region. Moreover, the camera is not static, but moves dynamically around its opt...

Gait Recognition by Applying Multiple Projections and Kernel PCA

Recognizing people by gait has a unique advantage over other biometrics: it has potential for use at a distance when other biometrics might be at too low a resolution, or might be obscured. In this paper, an improved method for gait recognition is proposed. The proposed work introduces a nonlinear machine learning method, kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA), to extract gait features from...
